杨州是有名的文化古城,处于长江与运河的交叉口,方园数百里内河湖纵横,富渔盐之利,加之工商业发达,航运通畅,清帝康熙和乾隆十二次南巡都曾经过这里。据记载,扬州曾建有两处行宫,一是天宁寺,一是高旻寺。如今高旻寺已被拆除,天宁寺还保存的比较完整。天宁寺位于扬州市西北,鄰近瘦西湖南端,是一座以天王殿、大雄宝殿、万佛楼等建筑为主体的规模宏大的寺庙。最早建于唐代,以后经过历代不断增修改建,到清代康熙时改建
