活塞环是活塞式压缩机中的重要另件之一。当压缩机工作时,活塞环在气缸壁与活塞之间起气体的密封和刮除黏附在气缸壁上的多余润滑油的作用。就其作用而言,要求活塞环的外园周应全部、均匀而紧密的贴靠在气缸壁上。因而也就要求所制造之活塞环应具备有良好的正园度和适当的弹力。又因为活塞环在气缸内以较高的速度运动（有时达6米/秒）与气缸壁间发生高速摩擦作用,从而产生高温,因而就又要求所制造之活塞环的材料应该具备有良好的耐热性能及耐腐蚀性能（特别是对压缩腐蚀性较强的气体的压缩机来讲）。
