自1981年Intel公司的8088处理器带来第一台微机以来,PC工业迅猛发展.这种发展很大程度上归功于In-tel公司不断推出功能越来越强人的处理器.今天,全球PC机拥有量已达1.5亿台,PC已渗入到商业管理、信息处理、科学研究和人们日常生活的各个领域,它正成为一个集多媒体和通讯功能为一体的“万能工具”.然而时至今日,PC工业也面临一些问题.平台技术远远落后于处理器技术的发展,使得系统整体性能无法充分体现处理器的强大能力.PC厂商们各自为政的状况也屡见不鲜,造成系统的价格昂贵、使用困难、管理复杂.同时,软件开发商们无法在统一的设计基础上开发多媒体和通讯方面的新的应用软件产品.随着Intel公司推出奔腾处理器,并且不断提高处理器能力,解决现存问题的新方法便应运而生.Intel公司充分把握PC市场和技术的发展趋势,推出了基于奔腾处理器、以多媒体和通讯为基础的PC平台新技术———主体信号处理(Native,Signal Processing,简称NSP).
