梧桐,是中国古典诗歌中的常见意象,早已为人们所熟悉。但在不同的意境中,梧桐却有着不同的意义,它可以是高贵、祥瑞的象征,也可以是凄凉、悲伤的象征。这种矛盾的说法值得探讨。由于梧桐高大挺拔,为树木中之佼佼者。自古就被看重,常把梧桐和凤凰联系在一起。凤凰是鸟中之王,而凤凰最乐于栖在梧桐之上,可见梧桐是多么地高贵了。如在我国的《诗经》里就有关于梧桐的记载。在《诗经·大雅》的“卷阿”里,有一首诗写道:
