The special status that Shanghai had between 1842 and 1943 was that it was imperfect in some important aspects and provided a place and a hotbed for many nationalist activities. This article examines five different levels of activity bred in the city, explores how they interact and outlines their impact. This article outlines three key elements shaping the city of Shanghai and its open and secret political communities: space, law and time (or calendar), examining the physical and administrative divisions that separate the city Interactions, and the constraints and creative opportunities they create, and a vivid portrayal of how nationalism interacts with the city in this place of empire with multiple nations.
