天津汽车工业在“六五”、“七五”期间,于1984年引进华利微型厢式车,1986年引进夏利轿车.1988年一期工程完工后,形成了2万辆华利和3万辆夏利轿车的生产能力.近期开发了华利高顶微型车,华利空调微型车和夏利三厢轿车3种新产品,并在改革中逐步提高了质量,使华利微型车1989年创市优,1991年创部优. “八五”期间,天津汽车工业调整了产品结构,确立了以夏利轿车为“龙头”带动全市汽车工业全面发展的总格局. “八五”期间规划目标是达到8万辆夏利轿车和2万辆华利厢式车的生产能力. 天津汽车工业尽管有了长足的发展,但要实现经济规模形成支柱产业还相差甚远.从规模和能力看实力较弱,在技术、开发上能力也较差,管理水平也跟不上形势发展,特别是加快老企业技术改造步伐上还有相当大的差距.
