In 1986, the Belgian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine took the first step for the Belgian Ministry of Health to recognize acupuncture. The Ministry of Health threw up the “Acupuncture Commission” in 1991 and promised to conduct research on the related issues in acupuncture and moxibustion. In October 1994, the Belgian Federation of Chinese Medicine founded a non-profit organization called PROCMED in the capital Brussels to promote awareness of acupuncture in Europe and to provide policy makers with a deeper understanding of acupuncture.
