从2003年9月进入新一轮课改开始,余庆县凉风中学的发展便面临严峻挑战。从学生方面看,学校主要服务的新场、马龙、凉风等三个行政村,贫困面大、极贫家庭多、学生家长大部分外出打工、留守学生多,生源总体质量不高,学生管理难度大,学生辍学率高。从教师方面看,学校距离县城30余公里,生活条件艰苦,教师流动性大,年轻教师数量多、比率大。从学校来看,由于社会声誉、硬件设施、整体师资、办学质量与邻近老区中学尤其是县城中学相比存在较大差距,属于服务范围的相当部分学生选择转
