This article discusses the current and future requirements and basic processes for in-mine portable coarse crushers used in hard rock open pit mines. This article is based on the work of the GATX affiliates, the Fuller Company (crusher manufacturer) and GARD (the GATX Research and Development Center), in cooperation with the Open Pit Mining Department under a contract with the U.S. Bureau of Minerals A mine inspection and equipment research work. The chosen crusher is a 60 x 89 inch (1.52 x 2.26 meter) gyratory crusher. Crushers of this size are capable of meeting the processing capacity (3500 to 4,000 short tons / hour; 3175 to 3630 metric tons / hour) normally required for the mine and are suitable for the normal block size of the mine.
