For direct drive fusion, a pre-distorted pulse with the complicated temporal shape is necessary. It is generally accepted that the pulse for shock ignition should begin with a low energy pre-pulse spike (picket) followed by a long (about 10 ns) low intensity foot pulse, which ramps up to an intermediate pedestal (compression pulse) and ends with a short high intensity spike.
