1949年前,各国在厦门的鼓浪屿设有领事馆,这可能是因为鸦片战争后,厦门得通商风气之先的结果。内中有美国领事馆,新中国成立前雇用本地人看门。新中国成立后,西人撤馆归国,美国领事馆也不例外。该馆有一个看门人,新中国成立后照旧上班,每天看门,夜晚关门,40年来竟然也相安无事。20世纪70年代中美再度建交。美国人回来收馆,
Before 1949, all countries set up consulates in Gulangyu, Xiamen. This may be due to the fact that after the Opium War, Xiamen had to live up to the business ethos. There are US consulates in China and local people are hired to watch before the establishment of New China. After the founding of New China, the Westerners retired and returned to China. The US Consulate is no exception. There is a gatekeeper in the museum. After the founding of New China, it still works. Every day, it looks at the door and closes the door at night.
