George Betts is an English teacher engaged by the University of Electronic Science of China from England. In his eyes. Chengdu has been built on a very human sca1e and everything is a short bike ride away. The conditions in Chengdu are better for cyclists. who have their own road and are shown consideration by drivers. From what he has seen form his bicycle, Chengdu is a city with two faces a modern provincial capital on the one hand and a mellow city with quiet back streets where old men sip tea, chat and play chess, on the other. He found that Chengdu is a city to be relaxed. In his opinion, Chengdu has lived up to the description in a guidebook:“a cheerful city. full of activity and a nice place to be”.
