Sweden has 23 million hectares of forest land, of which forest owners and other private ownership accounts for 50%, companies account for 25% and the remaining 25% are state-owned. The total annual growth of trees is about 80 million cubic meters and the annual timber harvest is about 65 million cubic meters. The main species are pine, spruce and birch. Thinning accounts for about 1/3 of the total timber harvest, the rest are clear cut. Timbering is an important part of the Swedish forest industry, accounting for one-third of all logs harvested per year. Over the past 15 years there has been a significant increase in labor productivity (logging, skidding, trace renewal and other operations) for timber harvesting in Sweden. In 1955, the labor cost per cubic meter of wood was 0.64 person-days, compared with 0.23 person-days in 1969. In the 1960s, the declining rate of labor consumption for timber mining in Sweden was about 8% per annum. If you’re logging and collecting timber alone,
