Researchers at the Roma Air Development Center, Westinghouse and other space companies are studying how to interface active elements on phase-array radar antennas with fiber optic cables. The advanced airborne radar antenna embedded in the aircraft’s case has 1000 to 10,000 active radiating elements. Each component must be connected with a coaxial cable using a microwave component. The cost of microwave components account for most of the phase array system. Coaxial cable is stupid and heavy, so that the airborne or ground moving device does not want to bear the weight of the load. Fibers are much lighter, cheaper, and transmit more data, making them an attractive alternative.
