Objective: To study the changes of cerebrovascular before and after ligation of bilateral common carotid artery in rabbits. Methods: Rabbits underwent angiography with femoral artery catheterization and bilateral common carotid artery ligation. The second cerebral angiography was performed 15 days later and compared before and after. Results: Compared with those before ligation, most of the cerebral blood vessels of the rabbits, especially the basilar artery, were tortuous, prolonged and thicker with a diameter of (0.96 ± 0.11) mm, which was significantly lower than that before ligation (0.66 ± 0.08 mm) Significant significance (t = 5.8355, P = 0.0015). Intracranial and lateral collateral circulation formed. CONCLUSION: After the common carotid artery is ligated, the collateral circulation of the rabbit brain increases and the thickening of the basilar artery compensates for the decrease of cerebral blood flow. In the model of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm, the common carotid artery ligation is a feasible technique.
