Adsorption of methyl iodide on silica-supported noble metalcatalysts led to the formation of partially dehydrogenated CHx species,whichbecame indistinguishable from CHx groups derived from the decompositionof methane.Here methyl iodide was tentatively used as the surface probemolecule which is usually used in CO hydrogenation. The effects of methyliodide adsorption and features of the surface carbonaceous species wereextensively studied by means of temperature programmed surface reaction(TPSR) and pulse reaction techniques. It showcd that the introduction ofprobe molecule is rather useful for the understanding of the nature ofmethane adsorption and reaction on transition metal catalysts.
