Although volcanic eruptions are audible and easily found in vast areas, some volcanic eruptions have not been discovered. In this connection, a team of German scientists presented evidence that a massive “undiscovered” volcanic eruption occurred in central Africa or the North Pacific in early January 1982. The evidence is obtained by observing the amount of light-scattering matter in the stratosphere. This group of the Frauhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environment near Munich was measured with lidar. The team, led by Dr. R. Reiter in early February 1982, detected a dense cloud of volcanic eruption particles 15 kilometers above Europe. Eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington State in May 1980
