Three Scientists Obtaining Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Karolinska Institute of Medicine, Sweden announced on October 8, 2007 that the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Mario Capecchi, Oliver Smith from the United States, British Martin Evans. They won the prize for embryonic stem cell research. The three scientists earned this distinction because of “a series of groundbreaking discoveries involving DNA recombination of embryonic stem cells and mammals.” These findings led to a powerful technique commonly known as “gene targeting.” The international team experimented with genetic changes in mice using embryonic stem cells
