《王钟霖日记》是一部尚未披露的戏曲史料丰富的抄本日记。王钟霖于咸丰八年至咸丰十年间在京师任职,他好观剧且喜记日记,对京师戏班之变化、名角之生平多有记载。对《王钟霖日记》中的戏曲史料进行辑录和考释后可以知晓,咸丰年间皮簧腔已占据京师剧坛盟主之位,梆子腔开始复兴,而昆弋腔则趋于衰落。“老生前三杰”中,余三胜演出频繁,程长庚虽然名动天下,但是演出较少;张二奎于咸丰十年去世,去世前基本不再登台,“老生后三杰”之一的“小叫天”谭鑫培则开始展露头角。张二奎以票友身份下海唱戏,名利兼收,由此引发了大批票友如张子久、袁复堂等人下海唱戏。此现象可称为“张二奎现象”。
