A non-linear, one-degree-of-freedom model is presented in this paper to analyze the gear rattle vibrations that occur in automotive manual transmissions. In order to consider the influence of the damping of the oil filled in the gap between the two teeth of the meshing gear, a simple one-dimensional model considering the influence of the film extrusion is recommended. The extrusion model assumes that the damping force depends on the viscosity of the oil and on the growth of the oil film on the tooth profile, which in turn depends on the lubrication conditions (dry sump, splash, dip bath). The results provided by some of the digital simulations provide the ability to test the oil to reduce dithering after a pair of helical involute gear teeth collide. The effects of oil viscosity and gap extension on the tapping characteristics were investigated, in particular, by analyzing the transient response of the driven gear with the effect of harmonic motion on the transmission gear.
