The Port of Beihai is situated at the southern border ofGuangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region and on the northernside of the Beibuwan Gulf of the South China Sea.It is an im-portant port of Guangxi Region open to foreign—flag vessels. As of the end of 1995.the port area of Beihai occupies15.71km~2 of land.The port has 11 berths.with total berthinglength of 1,218.5m,including 6 berth of 10,000dwt class orover.The largest ship that can be berthed is 35,000dwtclass.The port has a total storage area of 82,000m~2.and has52 units of handling machinery. In 1995,the Port of Beihai handled a traffic of 2.01 mil-lion tons,including 1,869,000 tons handled directly by theBeihai Port Authority.Foreign tread cargo handled was 1,088,000 tons,and containers handled were 6,035TEUs.202,000passengers were moved through the port.The top five ma-jor cargo types were oil natural gas and its products,light in-dustrial and medical products,non—metallic ore,chemical fer-tilizers and pesticides,and grain,accounting for 19.14％,1
