By A.D. 1000, the Chinesewere using “fire arrows.”At first, that name merelymeant conventional arrowsburning, but later it meantwhat we now call rockets. Chinese alche-mists mixed sulphur, saltpeter (potassiumnitrate) and charcoal (carbon) to make theexplosive gunpowder that was the earli-est solid fuel for rockets. By A.D. 1045,gunpowder rockets were important weap-ons in in China’s military arsenal.
