1982年,应美国《国际投资者》杂志的邀请,100多个周游过全球的各国著名企业家和银行家,评出了40家国际最佳饭店。在这次“国际大赛”中,泰国曼谷东方饭店荣获了“世界第一”的桂冠。1984年9月,又第4次赢得了“世界最佳饭店”的殊荣。饭店总经理是库特·瓦赫特法伊特尔,但对泰国人来说,瓦赫特法伊特尔这日尔曼姓实在太难念,因此,东方饭店的所有员工一直称他们的总经理为“库特先生”。库特先生手下的部门经理和负责人,不论男女,个个都很精干,人人都能独挡一面,这正是总经理得心应手地管理饭店的一个重要因素。有人曾问库特先生,东方饭店成功的秘诀何在?他毫不犹豫地回答说:
