This year, the Australian government has proposed a “science and technology budget report” that recognizes science and technology as an important and integral part of the economic agenda, including the process of economic restructuring. This report supersedes the previous S & T report, which is a survey report that is usually made a few months after the budget is finalized. The new report, which is released with the budget document, is based directly on budget information. It deals mainly with the budgetary issues related to the research of large research institutes and the research funded by major programs. In addition to its cultural role, the Australian government also considers science and technology to be an important part of the set of interconnected factors necessary to ensure the country's prosperity.
