潜艇在作战中具有荫蔽性、突然性和威力大的特点。近年来随着技术的进步,潜艇的战技性能不断提高,威力越来越大,其使命任务得到了进一步的扩展。美国利用“俄亥俄”级弹道导弹核潜艇改装的巡航导弹核潜艇可携带154枚“战斧”巡航导弹,能对1000多千米远的目标进行精确打击,极大地提高了美海军潜艇对地攻击能力。常规潜艇采用了不依赖空气的AIP推进系统后,已使常规潜艇的连续潜航时间大大延长,最长可达3周之多。另外,现代潜艇的降噪水平日益提高,先进的潜艇噪声水平已经降至接近海洋背景噪声,其下潜深度可达700多米,要想在茫茫大海之中,从水面到水下的广阔空间中,发现一艘在水下长时间安静潜航的潜艇,无异于大海捞针。所以,如何全面地发展反潜武器是21世纪世界各国海军所面临的极大挑战。
