The US Army is continuing its study of fiber-guided FOG-M missiles that entered the development phase in 1987 and will be in service around 2000. The United States Army has been working on a plan for fiber-guided missiles for decades. In fact, the program started in January 1977 with the first research contract with Hughes to identify dual-channel data communications using single-mode optical fiber dual-channel communications; Topography and target images from the front television camera are transmitted to the shooter and the other channel is used to send the guidance command back to the missile to hit the target.
