虚实相生的美学思想,贯穿于我国各门类艺术创作和艺术评论之中,而不同的的艺术门类对此又有不同的要求和不同的表现。虚实作为一种艺术表现手法,被广泛的运用到文学、绘画、音乐、雕塑、书法、园林等艺术门类。虚实相生表现手法的运用能使作品产生一种奇特的艺术效果,这种艺术效果具有一种艺术的简洁美、空灵美、朦胧美、想象美、以及意境美,使作品能焕发出奇异的艺术效果。虚实相生理论几乎成为我国一切文艺理论活动必须遵守的艺术原则,根据不同艺术门类所使用的材料和技法的不同,虚实所表现出来的特征也会有所不同。
