Many aspects of social and constitutional changes in China at the turn of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China have brought tremendous impact to the world. Taking the education reform in the late Qing Dynasty as an example, both the establishment of a new school and the abolition of the imperial examination in 1905 completely changed the way out and social space for traditional scholars. During this period, the scholars of learning had both accepted the traditional Chinese education and culture and had the opportunity to get in touch with the new knowledge of the West. Many of them even studied abroad and learned Chinese and Western languages. They played an important role in the social reform and development in modern China. The famous modern banker Bian Bai-mei (1884-1968) is one of them. This article will use the “Bian Bai Mei diary” and related literature to analyze Bianshi’s living conditions in Beijing and Tianjin, and explore the ideological world and the meaning of life, trying to use this as a case to deconstruct the early Republic of China in the metropolis The life style of class people.
