编辑制度的内涵是指一套用于形塑编辑活动参与者相互关系的规则;编辑制度的外延包括编辑部的独立设置、编辑规范制度、编辑培训和发展制度等。文章梳理了晚清民国时期商务印书馆的编辑制度由草创到逐步完善再到成为行业表率的过程,阐述其制度的创设与完善对于确保出版物质量、提高工作效率、增强企业效益起到的重要作用,并对当时的同行及新中国的编辑制度产生了一定的影响;进而指出出版行业的先进主要体现为制度和技术的先进,对于处于转型期的当代出版企业来说,其编辑制度改革既需要借鉴国外先进经验,又需要从中国现代编辑出版史的宝库中汲取养分。
