A dedicated high-resolution radar capable of mapping airport ground maps has proven to be a useful tool for monitoring aircraft movements with low visibility. This type of radar is what you call “airport ground detection equipment,” or simply ASDE. This article describes the ASDE-3 design principles and selection criteria of key parameters. The main features of the selected design are a rotary hood with a zoom antenna, a frequency agile TWT transmitter and a digital scan converter.
