Through a systematic review of the textbooks for English spelling published in the United States between 1775 and 1900, this paper examines the historical trends of American English spelling textbooks and their teaching methods during this period. From the earliest English colonial spellbooks to Noah Webster’s American spelling books and textbooks to the popularization and development of American spelling textbooks in the 19th century, early spelling textbooks used different ways of writing and teaching. As the American school curriculum expanded in the late nineteenth century, the historical role of spelling textbooks also changed.
