Jade Snow Wong(1922-2006) and Amy Tan(1952-) are famous Chinese American writers.Since Jade Snow Wongs Fifth Chinese Daughter(1945) and Amy Tans The Joy Luck Club(1989) were published, the two novels have been Chinese American literature classics and have attracted many critics attention. Some critics have explored the conflicts between Chinese culture and western culture,mother-and-daughter relationship, and cultural identity.Other researchers have studied the two novels from the perspectives of cultural criticism and gender.Few articles or thesis have debated the Chinese American womens identity from the perspectives of food. The article, based on feminist theory and theories about racism, explores the relationship of diet and construction of Chinese American women identity, revealing the significance of food in construction of Chinese American womens identity. The article firstly introduces the purpose and significance of the topic of the relationship between food and construction of Chinese American womens identity and then deal with it in three chapters.Chapter One interprets the relationship between food and humans, and women, and Chinese American women respectively.Chapter Two discusses how food constructs the Chinese American womens ethnic identity from Chinese American womens attitudes towards food which change frequently from their love for Chinese food, to their tiredness of Chinese food, to their choosing American food, finally to their accepting Chinese foodas well as western food. The change of their attitudes towards food reveals that they experience a difficult process of questing cultural identity, and ultimately recognize their own unique cultural identity---accepting the best quality of Chinese culture while adapting to American life.Chapter Three examines howfood constructs Chinese American womens gender identity.Food awakens Chinese American womens feminist consciousness and Chinese American women decide to make use of food to break the silence and construct their gender identity—to be an individual.Clearly, food plays a significant role in constructing Chinese American womens identity.
