The rapid increase in multinational companies (MNCs) operating in China, is witness to an ever-growing number of Chinese employees working for Western companies. It is important to understand the differences between Chinese and Western compensation practices in order to build effective compensation strategies for MNCs in China.Previous research identified and examined the differences between Chinese and Western compensation practices, and how Chinese employees react to Western practices.Thisstudy aims to provide MNCs practical recommendations on how to build successfulcompensation strategies when dealing with branches in China that utilise both Chinese and Western employees.Data gathering included interviews with human resource expertsand managers at MNCs in China and e-question naires for Chinese and Western employees working at MNCs.Validation involved a focus group to review compensation practices that evolved from the primary data.Three recommendations are presented for consideration for MNCs working in China. 1.Incorporate multiple compensation packages; 2.Ensure managers are culturally sensitive; and 3.Integrate selective hiring into their Chinese compensation strategy. Each strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages, and situations where each strategywould be useful are suggested. The study concludes with tentative explanations of thefindings and suggestions for future research。
