In recent years, research on the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension has been gaining much attention. That the vocabulary knowledge is instrumental in reading comprehension has long been accepted. But few studies have attempted to determine what role vocabulary knowledge plays in second language (L2) reading comprehension. Even within the small number of studies that have assessed the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in L2, the majority focus on breadth of vocabulary knowledge. Little recognition is accorded to the roles other aspects of vocabulary knowledge play.Chinese scholars pay more attention to the size of vocabulary. The impact of the depth of the vocabulary knowledge on reading comprehension has long been neglected, not to mention the impact of multi-meaning words on reading comprehension, though it counts a lot. In my research, I try to study the impact of multi-meaning words on reading comprehension. The results from data analysis indicate multi-meaning words have great impact on reading comprehension. Scores on multi-meaning words are predictive of students’ performance on reading comprehension.
