Edward hopper,one of the representative modern American painters.Among the many images of the American experience of modernity,his work is an excellent specimen.Hopper interprets the contradiction between the logic of existence in the real world and the hidden individual self-construction by the real expression of physical senses,and creates a sense of alienation by means of concrete expression.On the one hand,hopper expanded his artistic boundaries to the ubiquitous social life;on the other hand,he extended his artistic tentacles to the depths of the human soul,tore open the false veil of reality with great courage,and reflected on this call for the self-salvation of humanity.Based on the deep research of hopper on the theme of American modernity,this paper expounds the formal characteristics and spiritual connotation of hopper’s paintings.By use of hopper painting materials,and theme selection on a comb,further hopper art characters in the life the dynamic introduction of new social history theory horizon,sketched the hopper art interpretation of "the world and people","self" and people’s relationship and living predicament of modern people is common.Based on the complexity of hopper’s works,this paper starts from the theoretical methods of imagology,sociology and psychoanalysis,takes hopper’s artistic creation thinking as a foothold,analyzes his artistic images,and summarizes the practical significance and enlightenment of hopper’s art practice to the pursuit of Chinese cultural consciousness.
