刘勰文学理论的一个重要特点就是论文与论人紧密结合在一起。在《文心雕龙》中，他不同于传统文论大多从文学的社会功用价值方面阐述文学，而主要“是就作者之人而为言”。通过对创作思想活动、文学起源、主体修养、风格表现等问题的详尽论述，刘勰建立了他的主体性文学理论。刘勰在文学中强调主体性，就是强调主体精神在文学中的地位和价值；强调充分尊重和肯定创作个性。
An Important Feature of Liu Xie’s Literary Theory is that the essay is closely linked with the theory of man. In “Wen Xin Diao Long”, he differs from the traditional literary theory most of the literature from the perspective of the value of social function of literature, but mainly “is the author of the people to say.” Through elaborate expositions on creative ideological activities, literary origins, subject cultivation and style expression, Liu Xie established his subjective literature theory.
