Background: Hundreds of genome scale metabolic networks have been reconstructed based on genome annotation information.System-level analysis of these networks has helped researchers understand the physiological functional organization of cellular metabolism.Flux balance analysis is one of the most widely used methods for metabolic network analysis. In this work,we proposed a web based platform for functional analysis of metabolic networks using flux balance analysis and derived methods. Methods: In this study,a web based integrative platform is introduced. The server is hosted on an Apache server using a Linux operating system. The website framework is realized by Django.Functional analysis of metabolic networks using flux balance analysis and derived methods are implemented by programs written in python. The dynamic web pages are implemented by HTML,CSS and Javascript. Results and Conclusions: This platform is designed to provide integrative analysis for metabolic network.Users can review and modify the genome-scale network models by the web interface. The flux balance analysis and derived methods could help researchers simulate cellular metabolism.(1)Flux balance analysis helps researchers determine the steady-state reaction flux distribution in a metabolic network by maximizing an objective function.(2)Flux variability analysis can be used to calculate the full range of numerical values for each reaction flux in a network under a given simulation condition.(3)This platform can also help users to determine the flux distribution in a metabolic network for every biomass precursor.(4)The metabolic model can be used to predict single-gene(or reaction)or multiple-genes(or reactions)deletion phenotypes.(5)In particular, robustness analysis and phenotypic phase plane analysis allow the computation of how an objective of interest changes as the flux through specific reactions of interest varies. This platform provides user-friendly interface to facilitate genome-scale metabolic network reconstruction and analysis. It has been successfully tested on browsers running on Windows and Linux operating systems. The server is freely available at http://ibiodesign.net/fba.
