Black-bone silky fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus Brisson),a unique breed of chicken in native to South China,is hyperpigmented in its various internal tissues.Melanin was isolated from Taihe Black-bone silky fowl (TBSF) by enzymatic procedure with a yield of 0.12 g/100 g (wet weight basis).It could be found by amino acid analysis that there was protein associated with the isolated pigments,accounting for 25% of the total mass.The results of element analysis showed that the melanin contains many metal ions,and it is rich in Ca,Fe,Mg and Zn.Spectroscopic analysis and solubility properties revealed that the pigment is very similar to typical melanins.Element analysis indicated that the melanin mostly consists of eumelanin.
