Breast cancer is a common threat to womens health worldwide.It accounts for 22% of cancer incidence and 7% of cancer deaths in women.In Canada, breast cancer is the second leading cause of premature cancer deaths, accounting for about 18% of potential years of life lost (PYLL).Secondary prevention through screening has shown to be promising for early identification of disease and its treatment.Despite the availability of organized breast cancer screening programs in Canada the underutilization of these services by minority women prevails.Compared to other major chronic diseases awareness about breast cancer and screening remains far too low among immigrant women.Ethnicity is reported as a significant predictor of the stage at which breast cancer is diagnosed.
