One-pot conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol (EG) is a promising reaction for the sustainable production of bulk chemicals from renewable biomass. The process involves three consecutive reactions and several parallel reactions, among which the hydrogenation of glucose is a major side reaction that competes with the retro-aldol of glucose to the important intermediate glycol aldehyde, while the hydrogenation of glycol aldehyde leads to the target product EG.
