Lipocalins play important roles in regulation of immunological and developmental processes. As a family of extracellular proteins that share a common fold featuring a characteristic eight-stranded β-barrel with a highly hydrophobic interior, lipocalins not only participate in small, hydrophobic molecule transfer processes, but also the regulation of immunological and developmental processes.,They are also involved in the reactions of organisms to various stress factors and in the pathways of signal transduction.
