In this paper,we review the current literature on methodological issues in discrete choice experiments. In particular,we focus on the theoretical compatibility with the standard assumptions of rational choice theory.First,we review new developments with regard to regret minimization as an alternative to utility theory. Then,we focus on findings regarding incentive compatibility and find that several studies report evidence of overreporting of willingness to pay in purely hypothetical scenarios. However, some authors argue that the notion of consequentiality is far more important than the hypothetical vs.real payment debate. We review some of the recent findings on order effects, where studies find significant changes in reported preferences with regard to position of precedents of the choice sets.Evidence on status quo bias is also reported and systematically adressed by several studies, where status quo bias is found to depend on sociodemographic characteristics and protest attitudes. In the area of experimental designs, progress has been made in incorporating the non-linearity of choice models into the design creation process,in particular with efficient designs. Finally,we review some innovations in the area of estimation, foremost in the context of the random regret model.
