During evolution of land plants, shoot branching was one of the key innovations that led to more complex architecture.Strigolactones (SLs) were shown to represent a novel class of plant hormones controlling this process.SLs also act in the rhizosphere where they signal host root proximity during symbiotic and parasitic interactions.
