Practical experiences word-wide in past revealed that the fatigue life oforthotropic steel decks can be much shorter than other major structural members in highway bridges,which introduces a great challenge to the engineering community in China because of many recently-built long-span orthotropic bridges that are under high daily traffic volumes with high percentage of heavy vehicles in general.This article introduces a procedure developed to evaluate the orthotropic decks fatigue life by a three-level,two and three-dimensional computation-based models and the analyses to consider both global structural features and orthotropic detailing,so as to quantify both in-plane and out-ofplane load effects on the evolution of fatigue damages.
