1.To describe the elements and results of a group intervention for adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes and their parents. The hypothesis of the study was that peer group support and problem solving in a group intervention would improve HbA 1 c level without deterioration of health related quality of life.A total of 60 adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes, age 13 to 18 years, and their parents were invited to participate in this study.A total of 19 adolescents agreed to participate. They were recruited from the list of outpatient clinics in two centers in Norway. Both adolescents and parents were completing a battery of self-report measures (Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire), at pre treatment, during treatment, post treatment and at one year follow up.In addition the HbA1c values were obtained five times from the adolescents medical records. The results of the present study suggest that peer group support and problem solving in a group intervention would encourage communication and co-operation between adolescents and their parents, and that this is beneficial in the treatment of adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes. In terms of metabolic control there was a significant decrease in HbA1c in girls.2.The development of efficient psychososial interventions are highly needed. This intervention was peer-oriented and psychoeducative. Results from the study have demonstrated that this intervention can effectively improve metabolic control in girls without deterioration in health-related quality of life.
