Malaysia is a mass tourist destination and istraditionally renowned for its tropical rain forest.Nestled inglobalizing Asia,Malaysia regards tourism as a vital sector that lubricates economicgrowth.A holistic and integrated approach has been emphasized since Eight Malaysian Plan(2001-2005)in developing Malaysias tourist industry.Cultural tourism,an importantcomponent of Malaysias soft power,has becomes a compelling subject innew tourism policy byutilizing the extensive historical and cultural heritage of the country.In recent years,the OrangAsli or indigenous people have drawnthe attention of cultural and environmental tourists.The Orang Asli are a diverse group ofindigenes who maintain aclose physical,cultural and spiritualrelationship withthe environment,residing in remote communities such asforest fringes and rivervalleys.The culture of Orang Asli is unique and viable as a tourist magnet.This paper will arguethat the investment in the promotion of cultural tourism by featuring Orang Asli as an attractionadds to Malaysias soft power by demonstrating its concern for the well-being of indigenousgroups.
