Executive functions include processes such as planning, working memory, inhibition and attention control which are involved in the control and regulation of thinking and behaviour.Executive functions are mediated by frontal cortex, which undergoes an extended period of development from infancy until late adolescence.Analysis of the fatty acid content of frontal cortex has revealed high levels of the omega-3 fat docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which begins to accumulate in frontal cortex in the third trimester of pregnancy, and continues to accumulate throughout the lifespan.
