Objective:To investigate the antimicrobial properties of extracts from Salvia Przewalskii Maxim(Dazhidansheng,DZDS) in vitro and in vivo. Methods:In vitro, the antimicrobial effects of extracts from Salvia Przewalskii Maxim including ethanol and aqueous extracts were determined using the serial 2-fold dilution and the colony formation methods. In vivo,a sepsis mouse model challenge by Staphylococcus aureus was established to assess the anti-infectious effects of the extracts from Salvia Przewalskii Maxim. Results:The ethanol extract from Salvia Przewalskii Maxim significantly suppressed the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29213 and its clinical isolated strains in vitro. However, this antimicrobial effect was not observed in Escherichia Coli25922 and related clinical isolates. In vivo, the ethanol extract significantly reduced the mortality of sepsis mice challenge by Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29213 compared with that of the model mice. And,the protection efficiency reached about 42.9%.Conclusion:The ethanol extract from Salvia Przewalskii Maxim displayed a good antimicrobial property against Staphylococcus aureus property in vitro and in vivo, and it may be a potential agent for the treatment of sepsis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
