Both human speech and animal calls contain a quasi-periodical repetition of acoustic events. To reveal the neural encoding of repetitive sounds, many electrophysiological studies have been conducted on the auditory cortex of anesthetized animals. However, anesthesia could significantly alter the neural response patterns.Hence,in this study, we examined the properties of neural responses in awake rats.We recorded thc single-unit spike activities of primary auditory cortex (A1) neurons and poster auditory field (PAF) neurons, as the rats passively listened to the click trains at various repetition rates. Most of A1 units showed transient responses synchronized with the click trains, while PAF units showed non-synchronized responses, in which the mean firing rate encoded the stimulus repetition rate. Our results revealed a functional difference between A1 and PAF, and suggested that the high-level auditory cortex may rely more on firing rate to encode the temporal features of sounds.
