  The saffron (Crocus sp.) corms samples coming from Netherlands were screened by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay using the degenerate primers (Sprimer and M4T) specific for potyviruses.A cDNA fragment with a predicted length of about 1.7 kb was amplified by RT-PCR, indicating the saffron corms were infected by a potyvirus.The sequence analysis revealed the highest sequence identity (65.3% ~98.6%) with the ornithogalum mosaic virus (OrMV) isolates.Phylogenetic analysis revealed the closest relationship of the isolate (designated 2677-NL) with five isolates of OrMV from Australia (JQ807995、 JQ807996、 NC_019409、 AF185964、 AF185965).Thus, the virus infecting saffron corms was identified as Ornithogalum mosaic virus.To our knowledge,this is the first report of natural infection of saffron by OrMV.
